Eye Examinations

What Is An Eye Health Examination?

The health of your eyes goes far beyond your vision, and at French Eye Care Center we do much more than just fit glasses and contact lenses. A person can have 20 / 20 vision and have very sick eyes, and some people can have very healthy eyes, but yet be legally blind. The two do not necessarily mean the same thing. When you have an eye health examination in our office you will not only have your vision checked, but we also evaluate your blood pressure, the exterior structures of your eyes, eyelids, blood sugar levels if needed, tear production, the interior of the eyes for holes, tears, tumors, bleeding, glaucoma, cataracts or retinal diseases. Many systemic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, brain tumors, myasthenia gravis, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis have been detected through eye health examinations.

How Much Does an Eye Examination Cost?

The cost of your eye health examination will depend upon several factors. If you have a routine examination with a refractive diagnosis (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or presbyopia) the examination will cost less than a comprehensive examination with a medical diagnosis. Some insurance plans mandate that we bill for comprehensive examinations while others require us to bill for routine examinations. Please call us for more information.

Do My Eyes Need to be Dilated?

All patients presenting to our office for the first time will receive a dilated eye examination. Without dilating the eyes, the doctor cannot view the entire retina, optic nerve, lens and blood vessels on the inside of your eyes. During this portion of the examination the doctor will be looking for such conditions as holes or tears in the retina, tumors of the eye or brain, bleeding inside the eye, glaucoma, cataracts or retinal diseases, just to name a few. Depending upon your general health and any finding during the first examination the doctor will then discuss whether a dilated eye examination is need yearly.
