Complete eye exams are not just for updating your prescription. Dr. French is an optometric physician whose main objectives during your exam are to ensure the health of your eyes, determine the appropriate prescriptions (glasses, contact lenses, medications, or Myopia Management), and to prescribe the best products to make your eyes comfortable and efficient throughout the day.
There are four parts to a comprehensive eye examination.
First, our technician will bring you to an exam lane where they will interview you to get a complete description of any complaints or issues you may have with your vision, comfort, or heath of your eyes. You will want to be sure to give the technician an accurate list of all the medications you take, and not just those for your eyes.
Second, Dr. French will review the information collected by the technician and review any outstanding issues with you. He will then evaluate your contact lenses (if you wear those) and perform a refraction (the process of determining your spectacle prescription). This concludes the "Vision" portion of the examination.
Third, Dr. French will examine the external structures of your eye using a biomicroscope (slit-lamp) and measure the pressure in your eyes for the possibility of glaucoma. The technician will then place two drops in your eyes to dilate your pupils so Dr. French can examine all the internal structures of your eyes.
After 10-15 minutes Dr. French will return to your room to complete part four of your visit by examining the inside of your eyes using a lamp he wears on his head and a series of magnifying lenses. This will complete the health evaluation of your eyes.
At any point of the examination Dr. French may order tests to be completed immediately in the office (topography, biometry, fundus photography, optical coherence tomography, perimetry, pachymetry, dry eye testing, corneal sensitivity, binocular vision testing, etc.) or may order imaging (X-Rays, CT scans, MRI) or appropriate laboratory testing.
At the end of your visit you will receive your spectacle prescription, your contact lens prescription (if it is finalized at that visit), an email showing you how to access your records and prescriptions online, and any educational information we have discussed during the visit.
